Things to do in Galveston on a rainy day

By Melanie Nonmacher

Howdy, fellow Galvestonians and welcome visitors! If you're like me, you know that even a rainy day in Galveston is better than a sunny day almost anywhere else. So, if the beach isn't an option, what's there to do? Well, plenty! Here's a list of some of my favorite rainy day activities on our lovely island.

First off, there's no better way to spend a rainy day than immersing yourself in Galveston's rich history. The Bryan Museum is a great place to start. Housed in the historic Galveston Orphans Home, this museum features one of the world's largest collections of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork relating to Texas and the American West. It's a wonderful way to get lost in time while staying dry.

If you're an architecture enthusiast like me, Galveston's stunning historic homes offer a perfect rainy-day outing. The Moody Mansion, Bishop's Palace, and Ashton Villa are not to be missed. Each one is a gem of historic architecture and interior design, and they all offer intriguing glimpses into Galveston's grand past. Plus, their guided tours are both informative and entertaining.

For those who prefer a little retail therapy on a drizzly day, The Strand Historic District is the place to be. This five-block shopping district is packed with unique boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, and more. It's a great place to find that perfect souvenir or just enjoy browsing. And if you get peckish, there's a plethora of local eateries to choose from, each offering a taste of our unique island culture.

If you're here with the kiddos, don't fret! Rainy days are perfect for a visit to the Galveston Railroad Museum or the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. Both offer indoor fun and education for the little ones. And don't forget Moody Gardens! Its Rainforest and Aquarium pyramids are great ways to spend a wet day.

Finally, if you're looking to just relax and take it easy, why not check out one of our local cafes or bookstores? Galveston Bookshop is a cozy spot for book lovers, while Mod Coffeehouse offers a warm and inviting atmosphere to enjoy a good brew. Or, you can always curl up in your unique island accommodation with a good book and listen to the rain on the roof. After all, there's something special about a rainy day on Galveston Island.
