Where Island Time Begins

Following the devastation, our island's leaders faced a decision: abandon Galveston or find a way to protect it from future storms. They chose the latter, determined not to let our island's bustling commerce and vibrant community fade into history. Thus, the concept of the Galveston seawall was born. It was to be a Herculean task, a 17-foot high, 10-mile long bulwark against the Gulf of Mexico's fury.

Work commenced in 1902, with engineers using granite blocks from nearby quarries, poured concrete, and a lot of grit to build a structure capable of withstanding the might of the sea.
