Walking the Galveston Seawall: what to see and do
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello, fellow beach lovers! Today we're going to take a virtual walk along one of my very favorite parts of our beloved Galveston: the historic Seawall. Stretching over 10 miles long, the Galveston Seawall is a place where history, nature, and island culture meet. Whether you're a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, walking the Seawall is an experience you won't want to miss.
Let's start with the history. Did you know that our Seawall was built after the devastating Hurricane of 1900? The storm was the deadliest in U.S history, and in the aftermath, the resilient people of Galveston built the Seawall to protect the island from future hurricanes. Today, the Seawall is not just a protective barrier, but a symbol of our island's resilience and strength.
Now, let's talk about what you can see and do when you're strolling along the Seawall. First, there's the breathtaking view of the Gulf of Mexico. The azure waters, the white-capped waves, and the endless horizon are a sight to behold. If you're lucky, you might even spot a pod of dolphins playfully jumping through the waves.
Next, there are the beautiful historic homes and architecture. As you walk along the Seawall, you'll see a mix of charming Victorian homes, grand mansions, and unique beach cottages. Some of these homes have been lovingly restored and are now unique places to stay or dine in. If you're a history or architecture buff, you're going to love exploring these historic treasures.
And then, there's the vibrant island culture. The Seawall is lined with a variety of local shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. You'll find everything from seafood shacks serving fresh Gulf Coast catches, to hip coffee shops, to lively bars and music venues. And let's not forget the seasonal events. From Mardi Gras parades to sandcastle building contests, there's always something exciting happening on the Seawall.
So, are you ready to walk the Galveston Seawall? Whether you're up for a leisurely stroll, an invigorating jog, or a bike ride, the Seawall is a must-see destination in Galveston. Just don't forget to stop, take in the view, and appreciate the beauty and history of our beloved island.
