Annual events in Galveston you should not miss
By Melanie Nonmacher
Hello, Galveston lovers! I have lived and breathed everything Galveston for years and I'm thrilled to share with you some of my favorite annual events in our lovely island city. Galveston, with its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture, is a place that truly comes alive with these events, offering something unique for every taste, and a chance to immerse yourself in the local scene. So, whether you're a local or a visitor, make sure you mark your calendar because these events are too good to miss.
For the history buffs and architecture enthusiasts among us, the Galveston Historic Homes Tour is an absolute must-visit. Held annually in May, this tour offers a unique opportunity to step inside some of Galveston's most beautiful and historic homes. Each home tells a story of a time gone by, and the architectural details are truly a sight to behold. It's a wonderful way to appreciate the rich history of Galveston and marvel at how beautifully preserved these homes are.
If you're a foodie, Galveston Restaurant Week, usually happening in January, is your paradise. The local dining scene here in Galveston is varied and vibrant, and this event is a perfect chance to explore it. Participating restaurants offer special menus at discounted prices, allowing you to sample a wide range of delicious cuisine. From fresh seafood to delectable desserts, there's something to satisfy every palate.
Let's not forget about Mardi Gras! Galveston. It's one of the biggest events in Texas and it truly embodies the spirit of our island city. Taking place in February, this two-week extravaganza features parades, balcony parties, masked balls, and live music. Whether you're watching the elaborate floats, catching beads, or dancing in the streets, you're sure to have a blast. And the best part? The festivities are family-friendly, offering fun for everyone.
Galveston Island is known for its beautiful beaches, and what better way to celebrate them than the annual AIA Sandcastle Competition? Held in June, this event attracts teams of architects, designers, and engineers who create mind-blowing sand sculptures. The creativity on display is genuinely inspiring, and it's a fun day out for the whole family. Plus, you get to enjoy the gorgeous Galveston beach while you're there.
Finally, December brings the beloved Dickens on The Strand festival, a holiday tradition in Galveston. The city's historic district transforms into the Victorian London of Charles Dickens, complete with costumed characters, parades, and street vendors. It's a magical experience that will transport you back in time and fill you with holiday cheer.
There you have it, folks! These are just a few examples of the fabulous annual events that make Galveston such a vibrant and exciting place to be. Whether you're a local or a visitor, I hope you'll join me in experiencing and celebrating the unique charm and culture of our beautiful island city. See you at the next event!
