Annual events in Galveston you should not miss

By Melanie Nonmacher

Hey y'all! It's always a good time in Galveston, Texas, but there are some events on our island calendar that you simply can't miss. Our coastal town is always alive with vibrant festivities, eclectic performances, and celebratory parades that embody the unique charm of Galveston. From the historic Victorian era architecture to the sandy beaches, these annual events touch every part of life here and, oh boy, do we know how to throw a party! Let's dive right in and let me share with you some of the annual events in Galveston you should not miss.

First up is Mardi Gras! Galveston. Held annually in February, this event is not just a party; it's the largest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas. Our streets come alive with over 20 parades, concerts, balcony parties, and masked balls. The city transforms into a playground of beads, feathers, and revelry. Featuring both family-friendly events and late-night parties, Mardi Gras! Galveston provides a uniquely Texan take on this traditional celebration.

Next, we have Dickens on The Strand. Every December, our historic downtown district takes a step back in time to the Victorian Era. This holiday street festival is a beautiful spectacle where the locals and visitors alike dress in 19th-century attire. You'll see horse-drawn carriages, strolling carolers, and street vendors selling traditional Victorian goods. It's a charming nod to our city's rich history and a delightful way to get into the holiday spirit.

Now, if you love art, you won't want to miss the Galveston Island ArtWalk. This event happens every six to eight weeks and brings together the best of our local art scene. Galleries, restaurants, and retail shops open their doors to showcase the works of talented local artists. It's a fantastic way to support the local community and a great excuse to explore the heart of Galveston.

Don't forget the FeatherFest and Nature Photo Festival in April, where birding enthusiasts and nature photographers flock to Galveston. The island is a hotspot for migratory birds, and this event allows you to enjoy birding workshops, field trips, and photography sessions. It's equally enjoyable for beginners and experienced birders, and it's another great way to experience the natural beauty of Galveston.

Finally, an event that every food lover should mark on their calendar is the Galveston Island Shrimp Festival. This September event celebrates our local seafood industry with a shrimp gumbo cook-off, live music, and a 5K run. You can indulge in the best shrimp dishes, enjoy craft beer tastings, and even participate in a shrimp peeling and eating contest. It's a fun-filled weekend that truly captures the spirit of island life.

So there you have it, friends! These are just a few of the annual events in Galveston that you should not miss. Each of these events brings a different flavor to our island, making it a vibrant and exciting place to live or visit all year round. So whether you're a local or a visitor, make sure to mark your calendars. We can't wait to see you there!
