A local’s guide to surviving summer heat in Galveston

Howdy, Galveston friends and visitors! We all know that summertime in Galveston can be a scorcher. But as a local, I've learned a thing or two about beating the heat. So grab a glass of sweet tea and read on, because I'm sharing my top tips for surviving the summer heat in our beautiful island city.

First things first, always remember to hydrate. I can't stress this enough, y'all. Our Galveston sun is no joke, and it's easy to become dehydrated when you're out and about enjoying our historic homes and beautiful beaches. Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times, and make sure to fill it up regularly. Our local eateries are always happy to lend a hand with a free refill.

Now, let's talk about timing. The sun is at its peak from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so try to schedule your outdoor activities outside of these hours. Early morning is a great time to take a walk along the Strand, explore our rich history, or visit one of our many stunning architectural gems. And nothing beats a late afternoon or evening beach stroll, when the sand has cooled and the sunset paints the sky in hues of pink and orange.

Speaking of the beach, it's one of the best places to cool down. But remember, even on the hottest day, our Gulf waters can be surprisingly cool. Always check the water temperature before diving in. And don't forget to apply (and reapply) sunscreen. We're proud of our sun-kissed Galveston glow, but a sunburn is not the souvenir you want to take home from your beach day.

Of course, sometimes the best way to beat the heat is to retreat indoors. Galveston is home to a wealth of unique indoor attractions. Why not escape the midday sun in one of our cool, air-conditioned museums? Or take a break in a cozy café, where you can sip on iced coffee and watch the world go by. And let's not forget about our fantastic local shops, where you can browse for unique Galveston souvenirs or pick up a stylish new sun hat.

Lastly, don't forget about our fabulous community events. Summer in Galveston is packed full of activities, from outdoor concerts to farmers' markets, many of which take place in the cooler evening hours. It's a great way to soak up our unique island culture while staying cool.

So there you have it, folks. Summer in Galveston can be hot, but with a little local know-how, it's easy to stay cool. And remember, no matter how high the temperature climbs, the warmth of our Galveston community is always even hotter. Stay cool, y'all!
